Sunset Kitesurfing: Is It Possible at Óbidos Lagoon?

Sunset at Óbidos Lagoon with good wind conditions for kitesurfing

Short answer: yes, and it's actually one of the best times of day. In season, Óbidos's thermal wind often extends well into the evening, coinciding right with golden hour — the combination of good wind and spectacular light makes late-day lessons some of the most requested.

Why sunset often has good wind

Thermal wind is generated by the temperature difference between the sea and land, which intensifies as the day goes on. On many days in season (May-October), the thermal kicks in mid-afternoon and stays steady for several hours, extending into sunset.

The experience of riding in golden light

Beyond the practical side, there's something special about riding with the warm light of sunset over the lagoon's water — many experienced students and riders agree it's the most beautiful time of day to be on the water.

Practical considerations

  • Wind can drop in intensity as the sun sets — that's why we confirm the exact time based on the day's forecast
  • Light changes quickly near sunset — we coordinate so the lesson ends with margin before it gets fully dark
  • Cooler temperatures: bring something warm for after getting out of the water

Can you specifically request a sunset lesson?

Yes, tell us your preference when booking, and if the forecast allows that day, we'll schedule your lesson for that time slot. It's one of the loveliest combinations of learning and experience.
