Kitesurfing and Surfing: Can You Combine Them on the Same Trip?

Short answer: yes, and Portugal is one of the best places in the world to do it. Óbidos Lagoon (kitesurfing) is just 30 minutes from Peniche and Nazaré (surfing) — you can learn kitesurfing in flat water in the morning or afternoon, and surf world-class waves the rest of the day, all without leaving the same area.
Why this combination works so well
Kitesurfing and surfing share water-reading and board balance, but they're completely different experiences: one depends on wind in flat water, the other on ocean waves. Practicing both on the same trip gives you a much more complete perspective on board sports.
How to plan the ideal itinerary
- Base at Óbidos/Foz do Arelho: stay near the lagoon and take your kitesurfing course there
- Surf days at Peniche: 20-30 minutes away, with spots for all levels, including Supertubos for more advanced surfers
- Visit Baleal: a great beginner surf beach, very close to Peniche
- A tourist day in Nazaré: see the lighthouse, the town, and (in season, October-March) maybe giant waves from the viewpoint
How many days do you need?
With a week you can already do a full kitesurfing course (3-5 days) and combine it with 2-3 days of surfing or coastal tourism. If you have more days, even better: less rushing between activities.
The bonus of learning kitesurfing first
Many students who already surf say their previous board experience helps them progress faster in kitesurfing — balance and water reading carry over, though kite handling is still learned from scratch.
