Kitesurfing with Kids: Family Activities at Óbidos Lagoon

Family enjoying a day of kitesurfing and activities at Óbidos Lagoon

Short answer: Óbidos Lagoon is an ideal destination for a family plan: kids 12 and up (IKO minimum) can take kitesurfing lessons, while younger children and the rest of the family enjoy the lagoon's beach, the medieval town of Óbidos, or combine with Peniche and Nazaré.

What age can kids start lessons?

The IKO standard sets 12 as the minimum age for regular lessons. At that age, with kites sized to their weight and gentle wind conditions, many kids learn just as easily — or more easily — than adults, with no fear and plenty of energy for repetitions.

A typical family day at Óbidos

  • Morning: the lagoon's beach, calm and shallow water ideal for younger kids not taking a lesson
  • Afternoon: a kitesurfing lesson for whoever wants one (adults or teens 12+), while the rest enjoy the shore — parents can watch the entire lesson from the coast
  • Later: the medieval town of Óbidos, with its walls and cobblestone streets, is a short and charming visit for the whole family

What if the whole family wants to try kitesurfing?

For family groups we design custom sessions — tell us the ages and profiles of each person and we'll build a plan that combines lessons with free time at the lagoon.

Why Óbidos works well for families

The lagoon's shallow, wave-free water is much more reassuring for parents watching their kids learn, compared to open-sea spots. And the location — 1h from Lisbon, 30 min from Nazaré and Peniche — lets you combine with the rest of your family trip without long detours.
