Kitesurfing in Nazaré: Myth and Reality for Beginners

Nazaré coastline, famous for its giant waves, near Óbidos Lagoon

Short answer: Nazaré is world-famous for its giant tow-in surfing waves (the biggest ever surfed), but that's not representative of learning kitesurfing there. For learning, Óbidos Lagoon — just 30 minutes away — is the real option; Nazaré is best enjoyed as a spectator of the waves or, later in your progression, as an advanced wave-riding destination.

The myth: "I'll go to Nazaré to learn kitesurfing"

Many people associate Nazaré with kitesurfing simply because it's the town of the famous waves. But those giant waves are a phenomenon of a specific underwater canyon, ridden by professional tow-in surfers in extreme conditions — they have nothing to do with learning kitesurfing as a beginner.

The reality: Nazaré for kitesurfing beginners

As a learning spot, Nazaré has open sea with variable swell — not suitable for first lessons. What does make sense is combining your trip: learn at Óbidos Lagoon (30 minutes away) and visit Nazaré as a tourist to see the lighthouse and, if the season lines up (October-March), maybe catch giant waves from the viewpoint.

What about for advanced riders?

There, yes — the coastline near Nazaré offers wave-riding options for those who already have the level. But it's a later step in your progression, not a starting point. The natural path is: lagoon (learning) → coast with moderate chop → real waves.
