What Is IKO Certification and What Is It Really For?

Kitesurfing lesson with IKO certification included at Óbidos Lagoon Portugal

Short answer: IKO certification (International Kiteboarding Organization) is the international standard that certifies your kitesurfing level. Its most practical use: it lets you rent equipment and ride at spots around the world without having to prove your level from scratch every time.

What it actually is

IKO is the most recognized international kiteboarding organization, present in dozens of countries. It certifies both instructors (that's why you look for an "IKO instructor" when choosing a school) and students, through a level card (Kiteboarder Card) that officially tracks your progress.

What it's useful for in practice

  • Renting equipment abroad: most serious schools and centers worldwide require Independent level (3) certification to rent you gear
  • Continuing lessons in another country: you arrive at any IKO school and they know exactly what you know and what you still need — without repeating paid lessons
  • Insurance and liability: at some spots and clubs, certification is required to ride

How you get it

By completing a course with a certified IKO instructor, who assesses your skills according to the international standard. At We Are Salty People, certification is included from 9 hours of course — no extra cost or paperwork. When you finish, your level is officially registered.

IKO instructor vs. uncertified instructor?

An IKO instructor followed standardized safety and teaching training, with a globally proven methodology. It's not just a paper — it's the difference between someone who can kitesurf and someone who knows how to teach kitesurfing with real safety protocols.
