Kitesurfing Levels Explained: From Beginner to Independent Rider

IKO instructor teaching kitesurfing level progression at Óbidos Lagoon

Short answer: the IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) system organizes learning into 5 courses: Discovery, Intermediate, Independent, Advanced and Evolution. For most people, the first three are the path from zero to riding on your own — covered in a 9-12 hour course.

The 5 IKO courses, explained simply

1. Discovery — your first contact

Kite control on land and in water, wind window, safety systems, body dragging. This is the foundation of everything: here you learn to make the kite do what you want, not the other way around.

2. Intermediate — mastering the water

Directional body dragging (upwind and downwind), board recovery, power strokes, and water start theory. Here the kite becomes your tool, not your adversary.

3. Independent — the big milestone

Water start, riding in both directions, controlling speed, returning to your starting point, and full self-rescue. With this level you can rent equipment at any school in the world and ride unsupervised.

4. Advanced and 5. Evolution

Transitions, jumps, efficient upwind riding, waves, tricks. This is where kitesurfing becomes a lifelong sport — there's always something new to learn.

How long does it take to reach Independent?

It depends on your profile (previous sports, coordination), but the general reference is 9-12 hours of lessons in good conditions. At We Are Salty People, IKO certification is included from 9 hours of course, and 1:1 lessons with a radio helmet speed up progress.
