Private vs Group Kitesurfing Lessons: Which Is Better for Learning?

Private 1:1 kitesurfing lesson with full instructor attention at Óbidos

Short answer: a private 1:1 lesson is the fastest way to learn per hour invested — the instructor's full attention is on you and you're not waiting your turn. Group lessons are cheaper per hour, but your actual practice time gets split among students. The smart middle ground: semi-private (2 students, each with their own kite).

The math nobody shows you

In a 3-hour group lesson with 3 students and one kite, your effective time with the kite in your hands is about 1 hour. In a 3-hour private lesson, it's 3 hours. Group lessons look cheaper per hour of class — but per hour of real practice, private usually wins.

Each format, explained

Private 1:1 — one student, one kite, one instructor

100% your own pace, instant correction of every mistake, zero comparison with others. Ideal if: you only have a few days on your trip, you're coming in with some nerves, or you simply want the shortest path to independence.

Semi-private 1:2:2 — two students, two kites

Each with their own gear, practicing simultaneously under the same instructor. The sweet spot if you're coming with a partner or a friend at a similar level: a more accessible price with almost the same practice time.

Shared 1:2:1 — two students, one kite

You take turns with the kite: while one practices, the other watches (and you learn a lot from watching too, especially early on). The most economical option — great for tighter budgets and no rush.

What about groups of 3-4?

For families or groups of friends we put together custom group sessions — get in touch and we'll design the plan and price for your group.

Our honest recommendation

If you're passing through Portugal with limited days: go private. If you're coming as a pair with time to spare: semi-private. Either way, with a radio helmet and Óbidos's waist-deep water, every hour delivers the maximum.
