Do You Need to Know How to Swim to Kitesurf?

Óbidos Lagoon with shallow water where you can stand during kitesurfing lessons

Short answer: yes, you need to know how to swim — but you don't need to be a great swimmer. You need to feel comfortable in the water and stay afloat calmly. And here's a huge advantage in your favor: at spots like Óbidos Lagoon, most of the lesson happens in water you can stand in.

Why swimming is required

It's a basic safety requirement of any water sport: if something goes wrong far from shore, you need to be able to stay afloat without panicking. Also, part of the learning (body dragging) literally involves letting the kite pull you through the water — great fun if you're comfortable in water, stressful if you're not.

The advantage of shallow water

At Óbidos Lagoon the practice area has water at waist height. That changes everything psychologically: if you fall, you stand up. No rescue swim, no open-water anxiety, no waves crashing over you. It's the difference between learning relaxed and learning scared.

Plus, you always wear flotation

During lessons you wear an impact/flotation vest and a wetsuit (which also floats). Between the gear and the lagoon's depth, the real swimming requirement is much smaller than people imagine.

What if I'm a bit afraid of water?

Tell us before booking — you're not the first or the last. With 1:1 lessons, the instructor always nearby, and a radio helmet to hear instructions at all times, many students who respect the water end up being the most methodical and safe.
