What Do You Learn in Your First Kitesurfing Lesson? Minute by Minute

Short answer: in your first 3-hour lesson you learn equipment setup, safety, kite control on land and water, body dragging and self-rescue. You won't stand up on the board on day one (be wary of anyone who promises that) — but you'll leave flying a real kite, which is the foundation for everything else.
What a first lesson at Óbidos Lagoon looks like
First 20 minutes — setup and briefing
We assemble the kite together (learning to set it up is part of the course), go over the spot, the day's wind, and the safety systems. You practice the quick release on land until it becomes automatic.
The next 2.5 hours — into the water
- Kite control: keeping it stable, moving it along the edge of the wind window, generating and killing power at will
- Launching and landing: with assistance, the maneuvers at the start and end of every session
- Body dragging: letting the kite pull you through the water — the most fun part of day one and an essential safety skill
- Relaunching: what to do when the kite falls into the water (spoiler: it happens all the time, and it's an easy fix)
- Self-rescue: how to get back to shore safely if something doesn't go as expected
Last 10 minutes — pack-up and feedback
We put the gear away and review what you achieved and what comes next in your progression.
Why the first lesson shapes everything
The habits you pick up in those first 3 hours (good or bad) stay with you for the rest of your kiting life. That's why 1:1 lessons with a radio helmet make such a difference: every mistake gets corrected instantly, instead of becoming a habit.
