Best Places to Learn Kitesurfing in Europe (An Honest Guide)

European kitesurfing spot with steady wind ideal for learning

Short answer: for learning (not riding as an expert), what matters is: flat, shallow water, steady but not violent wind, space, and schools with certified instruction. By that criteria, the destinations that stand out most in Europe are Óbidos Lagoon (Portugal), Tarifa (Spain), the Ebro Delta (Spain), Lake Garda (Italy), and Greek lagoons like Limnos.

The criteria that matter for a beginner

A spot that's spectacular for advanced riders can be terrible for learning. Look for: water you can stand in (speeds everything up), steady wind of 12-25 knots, a rock-free bottom, and low crowding (fewer kites means more safety and space).

The destinations, one by one

🇵🇹 Óbidos Lagoon, Portugal

Flat water at waist height, reliable thermal wind from spring to fall, just 1h from Lisbon. Less crowded than the famous destinations — more space and attention per student. For beginners, arguably the best conditions-price-accessibility ratio in Western Europe.

🇪🇸 Tarifa, Spain

Europe's kitesurfing mecca with near-guaranteed wind. Downsides for beginners: the Levante wind can be violent and gusty, the sea has waves, and summer crowding is real. Spectacular for progressing once you already ride.

🇪🇸 Ebro Delta, Spain

Shallow waters and thermal wind. A good peninsular option, though with a shorter season and less tourist infrastructure.

🇮🇹 Lake Garda, Italy

Clockwork thermal wind (Ora and Peler) in a unique alpine setting. Downside: deep, cold water right from shore — nearly all learning depends on outside support.

🇬🇷 Greek lagoons (Limnos, Keros)

The summer Meltemi and spectacular shallow waters. Downside: getting there is expensive and the season is short (mainly July-August).

The variable nobody tells you about: the student-to-instructor ratio

You could be at the best spot in the world, but if you share an instructor with 4 other people, your real practice time gets divided by 4. Always ask about the ratio before booking — at We Are Salty People it's always 1:1.
