What Age Do You Need to Learn Kitesurfing? From Kids to 60+
Short answer: according to the IKO standard, the minimum age for regular lessons is 12 years old. There's no real upper limit — we've taught people over 60 who progressed perfectly. What matters isn't age but knowing how to swim, having a reasonable fitness level, and having the will to learn.
Kids and teens (12-17)
From age 12 (IKO standard) kids can take regular lessons, always with kites sized to their weight and in suitable wind conditions. Óbidos Lagoon is ideal for minors: waist-deep water, no waves, and 1:1 lessons where the instructor is always a few meters away with a radio helmet. Parents can watch the whole lesson from the shore.
Adults (18-50)
The most common range. Here the variable isn't age but previous sports: someone aged 45 with a snowboarding background usually learns faster than a 25-year-old with no board-sport experience.
50+ and 60+: yes, it's possible
Modern kitesurfing doesn't require brute strength — the harness transfers the kite's pull to your body, not your arms. What we do recommend for older students: private 1:1 format (your own pace, no group pressure), 2-3 hour sessions instead of marathons, and gentle wind conditions for the first lessons.
What really matters
- Being a confident swimmer
- Reasonable fitness (you don't need to be an athlete)
- Choosing the right spot: flat, shallow water forgives mistakes at any age
