Activities near Obidos Lagoon Peniche Nazare surfing medieval town Portugal

The region around Óbidos Lagoon and Peniche is packed with activities for days when the wind doesn’t blow — or for travel companions who aren’t kitesurfing. From world-class surfing to medieval towns and fresh seafood, here’s what to do in the area.

Surfing at Baleal & Peniche

Peniche is one of Europe’s top surf destinations, hosting the WSL Championship Tour at Supertubos. Baleal has gentler breaks perfect for beginners. Multiple surf schools operate year-round. Even if you’re primarily here for kitesurfing, a surf session is a great way to use a windless day.

Óbidos Medieval Town

Just 15 minutes inland from the lagoon, Óbidos is a beautifully preserved walled medieval town. Walk the castle walls, explore cobblestoned lanes lined with craft shops, and try the famous Ginjinha (cherry liqueur) served in a chocolate cup. Entry to the town is free.

Nazaré & Giant Waves

About 30 minutes north, Nazaré is home to the world’s biggest surfed waves. Even when the swell is small, the lighthouse viewpoint at Forte de São Miguel offers spectacular views. The town itself has a beautiful beach, excellent seafood restaurants, and a funicular railway to the clifftop.

SUP & Kayaking on the Lagoon

On calm days, Óbidos Lagoon is perfect for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. Several rental operators work from the shore. The lagoon’s wildlife (including seasonal flamingos) makes for a peaceful paddle.

Mountain Biking & Hiking

Coastal trails run along the cliffs between Bom Sucesso and São Martinho do Porto. Pine forest paths around the lagoon are ideal for mountain biking. The scenery is stunning, especially at sunset.

Food & Wine

The Silver Coast is known for its seafood: grilled fish, cataplana, caldeirada. The Óbidos wine region produces excellent whites and the town hosts an annual chocolate festival. Caldas da Rainha (10 min) has a daily fresh market worth visiting.

Golf

Three world-class golf courses sit within 10 minutes of the lagoon: Praia D’El Rey, Royal Óbidos, and West Cliffs. All offer ocean-view holes and are open to visitors.
