Kitesurfing in Baleal & Peniche: Summer Flat Water & Winter Wave Riding

Kitesurfing at Baleal beach Peniche Portugal empty beach small waves

Baleal and Peniche are famous worldwide for surfing, but they also offer excellent kitesurfing conditions that most visitors overlook. In summer, several beaches around the Baleal peninsula have tiny waves and virtually no surfers, creating perfect flat-to-small-surf conditions for kite beginners and freeriders. In winter, consistent south winds and clean swell make Baleal one of the best wave-riding kite spots in central Portugal.

Summer at Baleal: Empty Beaches, Small Waves

While the north-facing breaks around Peniche attract crowds of surfers, the south-facing bays on the Baleal peninsula often sit nearly empty in summer. With the Nortada blowing cross-offshore on these beaches, the water stays surprisingly flat with only small wind chop. For kitesurfers, this means spacious, uncrowded conditions with enough texture to practice transitions and short rides without the difficulty of open-ocean swell.

These conditions complement what you learn in the lagoon: after building your fundamentals at Óbidos Lagoon (20 minutes away), you can transition to Baleal for your first ocean sessions in a gentle, forgiving environment.

Winter at Baleal: South Wind Wave Riding

From November to March, Portugal’s weather systems regularly deliver south and southwest winds along with clean Atlantic swell. When these conditions align at Baleal, the result is world-class wave kitesurfing: cross-onshore wind, organized waves, and far fewer people on the water than in summer.

This is the progression path for riders who’ve mastered the lagoon and want to start riding waves with a kite. The beaches around Peniche offer multiple orientations, so there’s almost always a spot that works regardless of exact wind and swell direction.

The Two-Spot Advantage

At We Are Salty People, we teach beginners at Óbidos Lagoon (flat water, waist-deep, zero waves) and progress intermediate-to-advanced riders to ocean sessions at Baleal and Peniche when conditions suit their level. Having both spots 20 minutes apart means we always choose the location that matches your skills and the day’s conditions.

Getting There

Baleal is a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a causeway, about 5 km from Peniche town. From Lisbon, it’s roughly 90 minutes by car (A8 motorway). From Óbidos Lagoon / Foz do Arelho, it’s a 20-minute drive north along the coast. Accommodation in Baleal ranges from surf hostels to boutique guesthouses, and the village has a laid-back beach-town vibe with restaurants, bars, and rental shops.
