Best Months for Kitesurfing in Portugal: Seasonal Guide

Wind calendar kitesurfing Portugal best months April to October

The best months for kitesurfing in Portugal are May through September, when the Nortada wind system delivers consistent thermal winds along the entire Atlantic coast. However, each month has its own character, and the “best” month depends on what you’re looking for.

Month-by-Month Breakdown (Óbidos Lagoon)

April: Season opener. Wind starts building, 50–60% of days rideable. Water around 16–18°C (4/3 wetsuit). Few people, affordable accommodation. Good for returning riders warming up.

May: Excellent. Wind becomes more consistent (70%+ days). Water 18–20°C. Low crowds, good prices. One of the best months overall for lessons.

June: Prime conditions. Wind almost daily, 12–18 knots typical. Water 20–22°C. Still relatively uncrowded before the summer rush. Outstanding for beginners.

July: Peak season. Strongest and most consistent wind. Water 22–24°C. Busier on the lagoon, book lessons in advance. The Bom Sucesso estuary area closes to kites (June 15), so all activity moves inside the lagoon.

August: Hottest month, warmest water (23–25°C). Wind remains strong. Most crowded month for tourism generally, though the lagoon still has plenty of space. Book well in advance.

September: Many experienced kiters consider this the best month. Wind still strong, crowds thinning, water still warm (21–23°C), accommodation prices drop. Excellent for lessons and progression.

October: End of the reliable wind season. 50–60% of days rideable. Water cooling (18–20°C). Quiet, atmospheric, great value. Last chance before winter.

November–March: Off-season for thermal wind. Rideable days drop to 30–50%, mostly from Atlantic weather systems rather than the Nortada. Water 14–17°C. South winds can deliver excellent wave-riding conditions at ocean beaches like Baleal and Peniche.

Sweet Spot for Beginners

If you’re learning from zero, May, June, or September offer the best balance: consistent wind, comfortable water temperature, fewer people, and lower prices than peak summer.
