What Kite Size Do You Need Based on Your Weight?

Short answer: kite size depends on your weight AND the day's wind — there's no fixed number. As a general reference: with 15 knots, a 154lb (70kg) rider usually needs a 10-12m kite; with 20-25 knots, that same weight drops to 7-9m. That's why experienced kitesurfers own several kites (a "quiver").
Reference chart (approximate, for 154lb/70kg)
- 10-15 knots: 12-14m kite
- 15-20 knots: 9-12m kite
- 20-25 knots: 7-9m kite
- 25-30+ knots: 5-7m kite
Adjust upward if you weigh more, downward if you weigh less. As a rough rule: for every 20-30lb (10-15kg) of difference, add or subtract 1-2m² from the reference size.
Why there's no "one" size for you
The same 154lb rider needs a completely different kite on a 12-knot day than on a 25-knot day. So the right question isn't "what kite should I buy" but "what kites do I need to cover the wind range at my usual spot".
The typical "quiver" of an experienced rider
Most kitesurfers end up with 2-3 kites of different sizes to cover a wide wind range — for example, a 12m, a 9m and a 7m cover most conditions at a spot like Óbidos.
What about during the course?
Don't worry about this yet: in your lessons you use the school's equipment, which the instructor adjusts based on your weight and the day's wind. Once you finish the course and think about buying, we advise you for free on what sizes make sense for wherever you'll usually ride.
