Most Common Kitesurfing Injuries and How to Avoid Them

Short answer: the most common kitesurfing injuries are ankle/knee sprains (from falls or the board), bar impacts, and line burns on the hands. Nearly all of them are prevented with good technique, well-maintained gear, and a suitable spot like flat, shallow water.
The most frequent injuries, one by one
Ankle and knee sprains
Usually happen from a bad landing off a jump or falling with the board still on at a weird angle. Prevented with good landing technique (taught progressively) and properly adjusted straps.
Bar impacts
A sudden movement or a fall can cause the bar to hit your face or body. With good handling technique (smooth, not jerky movements) this risk drops a lot — it's one of the first things corrected in a lesson.
Line burns on the hands
If you let go of the bar suddenly with a line sliding between your fingers, it can burn. Avoided with correct release technique (and thin gloves if you have sensitive skin).
Impacts against the bottom
At spots with rocks or an uneven bottom, a bad fall can end in an impact. That's why the spot's bottom matters as much as the wind — at Óbidos Lagoon the bottom is sandy and even in the practice zone.
The factor that reduces risk the most: the right spot
Most of these injuries get worse in open sea (more depth, more current, less control of the situation) and are minimized in flat, shallow water like a lagoon: if you fall badly, it's easier to quickly regain control.
What a certified instructor does
Teaches correct technique from day one (not just "whatever works," but what's safe long-term), corrects dangerous habits before they become routine, and picks appropriate wind conditions and spots for each level.
