After Independent Level in Kitesurfing: What's Next?

Advanced kitesurfing rider progressing past Independent level

Short answer: after Independent come the Advanced and Evolution levels of the IKO system, which cover transitions, jumps, efficient upwind riding, waves and tricks. But beyond the formal certification, this is the stage where kitesurfing becomes a lifelong sport, with very different paths depending on what you enjoy.

Possible paths after Independent

Freestyle — tricks and rotations

The path for those who enjoy pure technique: handle passes, rotations, combos. Requires progressive work and is usually practiced in flat water with good wind.

Wave riding — waves

Combines the kite with traditional surf-style wave reading. Ideal if you already like surfing — Portugal, with Peniche and Nazaré 30 minutes from Óbidos, is a spectacular place for this path.

Foil — the board that "flies"

Using a hydrofoil under the board, you ride above the water with much less resistance — allowing you to kite in gentler winds with a completely different feeling.

Downwind and expeditions

For those who enjoy riding long distances and exploring new coastlines — the most "adventurous" path in the sport.

Do you need certification to progress?

It's not mandatory, but continuing with an instructor at this stage speeds up learning enormously and prevents bad habits that are hard to correct later. IKO's Advanced and Evolution levels formalize this progress if you're interested in having it documented.
