Best Time of Year to Learn Kitesurfing in Portugal

Summer thermal wind ideal for kitesurfing lessons in Portugal

Short answer: the main season at Óbidos Lagoon runs from May to September/October, with the NW thermal wind at its most consistent during the summer months. If you want fewer people and good wind, June and September are the sweet spot: reliable thermal, pleasant temperatures, and a quieter lagoon than in August.

Month by month at Óbidos Lagoon

May-June — the ideal start

The thermal starts settling in, the water warms up, and the lagoon is still quiet. June is probably the best value month of the year: summer conditions without summer crowds.

July-August — peak summer

The most reliable thermal of the year (kicks in almost every afternoon), water at its best temperature, very long days. Downside: more tourism — though nothing like Europe's mass-market spots. Worth booking ahead.

September-October — the locals' secret

The thermal keeps working in September, the water retains summer heat, and the lagoon empties out again. October is more variable but can deliver spectacular weeks.

November-April — front season

The wind shifts from a predictable thermal to Atlantic fronts: days of strong wind interspersed with calm. You can still kite (with winter wetsuits), but for a beginner course the predictability of summer is the better investment.

The thermal pattern: the perfect afternoon lesson

In season, the typical day is: calm morning, thermal kicks in between 1-3pm, and blows steadily into the afternoon-evening. That's why most lessons are scheduled in the afternoon — and why we confirm the exact time based on each day's forecast, so your lesson always lands in the best window.
