Obidos Lagoon location map Foz do Arelho kitesurfing lessons Portugal

Óbidos Lagoon (Lagoa de Óbidos) is located on Portugal’s Silver Coast, near the village of Foz do Arelho, approximately 80 km north of Lisbon. It is the largest saltwater lagoon in Portugal and one of Europe’s best flat-water kitesurfing spots. We Are Salty People teaches all lessons directly on the lagoon.

Exact Location

The lagoon sits between the towns of Foz do Arelho (south bank) and Bom Sucesso (north bank), in the municipality of Óbidos, Leiria district. The medieval town of Óbidos is 15 minutes inland. GPS coordinates for the main kite area: approximately 39.4183°N, 9.2217°W.

How to Get There

From Lisbon (1 hour)

Take the A8 motorway heading north. Exit at Caldas da Rainha / Foz do Arelho. Follow signs to Foz do Arelho. The drive takes 50–70 minutes depending on traffic. Free parking is available along the lagoon shore.

From Lisbon Airport

Rent a car at the airport and take the A8 directly. Alternatively, take a bus to Caldas da Rainha (Rede Expressos, about 90 minutes) and arrange a taxi or Uber for the final 10 minutes to the lagoon.

From Peniche / Baleal (20 minutes)

Head south along the N114 or coastal roads. If you’re staying in Peniche or Baleal for surfing, the lagoon is a quick drive for your kite sessions.

From Porto (2 hours)

Take the A1 south to the A8, then follow the same route as from Lisbon.
