What to Expect in Your First Kitesurf Lesson
Body Dragging, Water-Starts & the First Steps to Freedom
So, You’ve Decided to Learn Kitesurfing?
Welcome! You’re about to start one of the most exhilarating sports on the planet. But before you’re gliding across the water, there are a few key steps every kitesurfer must go through. This blog will walk you through exactly what to expect in your first kitesurf lesson—so you can arrive confident, informed, and stoked.
The First Kitesurfing Lesson: Ground Zero
Your first lesson is about building a foundation in safety, control, and confidence. At a professional school (like ours at Salty People in Óbidos Lagoon), we make sure no step is rushed and every part of the process is fun and clear.
What You'll Learn:
Basic wind theory and how it affects kite setup
Equipment introduction: kite, bar, harness, board
Safety systems: how to use the quick release and safety leash
Spot assessment: learning how to read the beach and wind direction
Kite Handling on Land
You’ll start by flying a trainer or full-size kite in shallow water or on the beach. The goal is to:
Understand kite control using both hands
Practice steering, depowering, and keeping the kite stable
Learn where the “power zone” is—and how to avoid it for now
This stage is where you feel the energy of the wind for the first time!
Body Dragging – Your First Time in the Water
Next, it’s time for body dragging, one of the most important parts of learning to kitesurf. You’ll enter the water (without a board yet) and use the kite to pull you through the water.
Why It’s Crucial:
Teaches kite control in the water
Helps you learn how to recover your board
Builds confidence with power and steering
Most students love this stage—it’s where theory meets real movement!
Water-Start Basics – Getting Ready to Ride
If you're progressing well, your instructor may introduce you to the board and water start technique by the end of the lesson or on your second day.
You’ll learn:
How to control the kite with one hand while positioning the board
How to time the kite’s pull with your legs for your first stand-up
Proper stance and balance to avoid common falls
Even standing up for one second is a major win!
How Long Until You’re Riding?
Most beginners need around 6–12 hours of lessons to get up and riding on their own. Your first lesson is just the beginning of an epic journey—each step builds on the last.
Some students ride in just 3 sessions; others need more. Everyone learns at their own pace.
Tips to Prepare for Your First Lesson:
Bring sunscreen, a towel, and a reusable water bottle
Wear a wetsuit if it’s cold (we can provide one too!)
Don’t overthink it—have fun and enjoy the process
Final Thoughts
